Immediately after lunch (i.e., naptime), people began dozing off as he started to narrate his slides. He knew then something had to change. Thus, he began his study of effective communication. He was soon thrown into the fire, leading the training on a new digital technology for more than 10,000 TV engineers and technicians. During that time, he was able to get buy-in from hundreds of previously reluctant executives, vendors, and engineers across an entire industry. David now shares what he has learned on his journey with scientists and technical experts so they can effectively connect and engage with their audiences. As a TEDx speaker and coach, he has studied under world-champion speakers and is a Certified World Class Speaking CoachTM. Additionally, he has contributed to books in both engineering and communication, including the NAB Engineering Handbook and World Class Speaking in Action. George Bernard Shaw said, “The United States and Great Britain are two countries separated by a common language.”

Sandi Small is an accent coach. She trains American actors to British up their accent and their role.

Sandi noticed that American actors were confused about the numerous British accents and many coaches are too generic in accent training: they teach all of the accents, but do not specialize in one. She decided to specialize in the standard British accent, otherwise known as ‘received pronunciation’ or RP.

Sandi observed that American actors wishing to train in the British accent would need much more than a change in the phonetic sounds. They would be learning a different language in many respects, because British and American English differ in so many areas, such as vocabulary, grammar, word stresses, and voice intonation.

She also noted a lack of cultural awareness from the American actors wishing to train in the British voice. Language and culture are interlinked. She decided to train American actors in inter-cultural awareness. Her holistic approach allows for a full immersion into the British accent.

Sandi has a background in applied linguistics and has been a film buff for years, as well as a fan of classical theatre and literature. She has been in the teaching and training industry for 20 years, including schools, colleges, universities, and training centers.

Jeermal “Mr. Me Too” Sylvester is the epitome of a winner. He overcame fatherlessness, poverty, and the pain of a broken home to become one of the more accomplished basketball players in the state of Indiana. After a four-year professional basketball career, Jeermal continues to make a significant impact on young athletes and disadvantaged youth by sharing his testimony of overcoming obstacles and his motivational message to ‘rise through the fire.’ Jeermal was sent from Chicago, Illinois by his Mom to live with relatives in South Bend, Indiana as a small child. He learned to channel his bottled-up feelings of abandonment and resentment into basketball. He quickly became one of the top high school basketball players in Indiana. He broke records, earned a spot on the 1990 Indiana All-Star team, and accepted a full athletic scholarship to Ball State – a Division I university. Jeermal continued to excel at the collegiate level. He was expected to play in the NBA. However, during his senior season, he was involved in a physical altercation with a teammate and suspended from the team indefinitely. This ruined his chance at achieving his NBA dream. Jeermal is always persistent. He didn’t give up on his professional sports goals. He played professional basketball in Europe. After four years, he experienced a career-ending knee injury. He was devastated. Faced with the fear of losing the one outlet he had for his pain. Jeermal used his Criminology and Psychology of Human Development studies from college to help other students, athletes, and adults through the same obstacles that he had faced. He began to use his wisdom to help others rise through the fire! Being vulnerable can instill fear in any of us. There is tremendous power in embracing your vulnerability. The more vulnerable you are, the more thrilling the rewards. Originally from Oklahoma, Jeremy Parr is now living and working as an actor and percussionist in Los Angeles. He holds music degrees from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma City University. After graduate school, Jeremy worked as a high school band director in Moore, Oklahoma for seven years. He was responsible for coordinating the percussion programs for three schools, conducting a high school symphonic band in the spring, assisting with jazz studies, and team teaching a 170 member marching band in the fall. Somewhere in those seven years, Jeremy started taking improv comedy classes. Eventually, he had a successful career as a film actor in the Oklahoma and Texas markets. After he resigned from public school teaching in 2016, Jeremy focused on his acting career while being a working percussionist. Jeremy was fortunate to perform with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Smith Symphony, Oklahoma Composer's Orchestra, and many other groups. Melanie Fatuesi was born and raised in a small auto manufacturing town in Michigan. At 18, she joined the Army and traveled the world, from Somalia to Guantanamo to Korea. After ending her service, Melanie worked as a Government Contractor in Italy. In 2009, she returned to the US. While volunteering with the Chapin Marching Band, she was offered a position with the local Dale Carnegie Group. She started as an office assistant and quickly transitioned to one of El Paso’s most sought-after up-and-coming speakers. She currently recruits nurses for a major corporate hospital, in addition to her many speaking engagements. She serves on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters. She is featured as on-air talent with El Paso’s local PBS station KCOS and served on their board of directors from 2014-2016. He was an All American as a sophomore, posting a single game record of 376 receiving yards in one game. After three years there, he transferred to San Diego State. There, he and teammate JR Tolver set an NCAA record for most receiving yards and catches by a tandem in one season. In 2003, Kassim signed with the San Diego Chargers as an Undrafted Free Agent. He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection for his Outstanding Performance on Special Teams. He was also named to the All-Pro team. Kassim also played two years with Jacksonville, one year in Detroit, and finished his career with two years in San Francisco. After football ended, Kassim reignited his acting career. Vernon Budinger has found that people often have bad habits that convey a lack of confidence and destroy any passion in their message. They literally “shoot themselves in the foot.” Vernon Budinger has worked in the finance industry for almost thirty years. He received his MBA from New York University with Distinction. He then went to work on Wall Street for Citicorp Securities Markets. He earned his Chartered Financial Analyst designation and went on to work for hedge funds (specialized, higher-risk investment funds). Vernon left his most recent employer to start his own hedge fund to invest in Brazil. He soon found out that promoting hedge funds is much more difficult than building one. One day he watched a video of one of his presentations and realized that, based on the presentation, he probably would not even invest in himself! That is when he joined Toastmasters and got serious about speaking. He observed that some investment managers were successful in finding investors, even though they did not have the best presentation or the best investment process. He researched the components of confidence and passion that lead to successful sales. He learned that people often have bad habits. These habits convey a lack of confidence and destroy any passion in their message. Through experimentation, he found that the best approach for eliminating the bad habits was to substitute good habits and start by mentally “pretending” that he had always had the good habits. Some folks call this “Fake Until You Make It.” Amy Cuddy, a famous behaviorist that taught at Harvard, called it “Fake It Until You Become It.” Vernon thought that this was a bad name for a great idea. His approach is to learn to behave so you don’t shoot yourself in the foot and destroy the confidence and goodwill that you have built up with the audience. His approach came full circle when he saw Tom Iland speak. Tom was diagnosed with autism when he was 13 years old. Instead of living as a behavioral outcast, he replaced his bad autistic habits with good habits. Vernon realized, that we are not becoming someone else when we eliminate bad habits, like Tom Iland, we are discovering our real self, the self that can connect with people is a real way.

At one time, Sheryl Hensel was a middle school teacher. But a good Samaritan act changed the course of her career. Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant is a 24-year old undefeated American boxer. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee. Caleb had always dreamed of one day becoming a father. That dream came true when his daughter Alia Jean Plant was born on May 7, 2013. Sadly, she passed away at 19 months old. She contracted a very rare disease that has yet to be diagnosed. On January 29, 2015, Alia Jean Plant left to be with the Lord at 10:55 am. Before and after every bout, Caleb dedicates his fights to his daughter Alia. As a young boy, Caleb lived in extreme poverty. They lived in a trailer that every once in a while, had no running water. Because of this sometimes his hair was oily and greasy, Caleb was bullied by other children at school. The experiences in Caleb’s childhood are experiences no child should have to bear. Because of these experiences, Caleb vowed to become a successful professional fighter. At the age of 9, Caleb’s father Richie, a former kickboxer, brought his son to the gym. His dad wanted to give Caleb an outlet to better himself. He wanted Caleb to be more successful in life -- not be a statistic, like most other kids growing up in his neighborhood. Caleb started kickboxing. He became a seven time national champion and five time world champion, before making the transition to boxing. As an amateur boxer, Caleb won numerous tournament titles. He compiled a record of 97 wins with only 20 defeats. Caleb then turned professional. Caleb moved from Nashville to Las Vegas to pursue his dream of becoming a world champion.
